Palatine Hill
The Palatine hill holds the most ancient memories of Rome. Shepherds lived on the hill during the 9th century and according to the legend, Romulus founded the Roma Quadrata in 754 b.C. It became the residence of the powerful and the wealthy people during the Republic, whilst it was considered the official residence of the emperors during the Imperial era. It was the residence and fortress of the Frangipane during the middle ages. The Farnese was later transformed into a beautiful villa.

Casa di Livia is a rich roman residence dating back to the last period of the Republic.
Criptoportico
It is a gallery running along the Tiberian palace that dates back to the neronian period. It was thought that it was used to link Augustus and Tiberius’s palaces to the Domus Aurea Neronian. Turning left of the Criptoportico we find a staircase leading to the Palace of the Flavi.
Palace of the Flavi (Palazzo dei Flavi)
It was built by Domitian at the end of the 1st century a.C. and was the representative palace of the emperor. Three halls are aligned behind the magnificent front of the palace that faces towards the Forum: the throne room (aula regaia), a basilica which probably served as a law court and the imperial private chapel. A vast central courtyard is situated behind the halls, with a basin positioned in the centre and several smaller rooms with apses on both sides. At the far end there is a large hall which was used for banquets and is still partially paved with the original marble.
Domus Augustana (House of Augustus)
Fu fatta costruire dall’imperatore Domiziano. Era parte integrante del palazzo imperiale, destinata ad abitazione privata dell’imprenditore e della sua famiglia. Il ripiano inferiore occupava una parte del pendio verso il Circo Massimo, mentre il superiore occupava l’alto colle.
Stadium (Stadio)
The Stadium was built by Domitian to celebrate competitions and celebrations. It was surrounded by a portico: in the center, on the eastern oriental side a niche opens towards the imperial lodge. Two semicircular buildings are situated on both sides of the arena.
Baths and Severiano Buildings
The baths were built by Settimio Severo for the imperial palace. Adjacent to the imperial loggia we find the ruins of the apse environments.
